What is Rosacea?

Rosacea treatment in Naples, FL

If you have been having problems with your complexion, it might not just be common acne or a reaction to something. You may actually have a skin disease called Rosacea.

It can start with a reddening, almost a flushed face. This can spread across the face, the forehead, nose, and even down the neck and back. It can also progress to visible or broken blood vessels, pimple-like sores, bumps, and swelling.

It can also have a severe effect on your eyes, as well. It is quite common that the symptoms start with your eyes.

  • Swollen, red eyelid

  • Red, bloodshot eyes

  • Redness and swelling around your eyes

  • Crusty eyelids or eyelashes

  • Tearing

  • Dry itchy eyes

  • The feeling you have something in your eye

  • Burning

  • Itching

  • Sensitivity to light

These can happen before you see any type of issues with your skin, or they happen at the same time.

Who Gets Rosacea?

While the actual cause of rosacea isn’t clear, it is rather common. Those most often affected tend to have fair hair and skin. There is very often a family history of rosacea or severe acne.

Those who have experienced bad cases of acne seem more likely to develop rosacea and more often people between the ages of 30 to 50. There are a few commonalities that seem to reappear with this skin disease.

Some factors that may lead to people having these skin diseases are the way the protein that protects the skin from infections isn’t processed properly.

Mites that live on our skin may be a cause for it to develop or worsen.

Bugs that can cause infections in our intestines may play a role in cases of rosacea.

Treatments for Rosacea

Treatments for rosacea can vary, depending on your own situation. The things that bring it on can also vary. There is no medical test to know for certain that you have rosacea, but there are ways of managing it.

Protect your skin from the elements. Avoid strong winds hitting your face whenever possible. Cold, strong, biting winds can cause the skin to get dry, chapped, and even cause it to crack.

Avoid the direct sun and use a strong sunblock. Wear a hat that covers your face and wear sunglasses and protective clothing around areas that are susceptible to rosacea.

Use mild products on your skin, avoid products with added ingredients like color and scent. Try not to scratch and pick at your skin and keep it clean from the pollutants and daily grime that we all face every day.

Avoid using washcloths, toners, astringents, and scented soaps. Consult your dermatologist as they may have special treatments to help ease the redness, swelling, and irritation of rosacea.

You can apply makeup to cover the spots or to help with the redness. Be careful of the types of makeup you use, however, as they may irritate the skin or even make the situation worse.

Prescriptions

There are medications and medicated creams you can get to help with cases of rosacea that are more severe. Brimonidine gel and oxymetazoline hydrochloride cream are prescription medications that can reduce the redness. They work for up to 12 hours and with daily use, you can have reduced facial redness throughout the day.

Lasers

Your dermatologist may recommend you get laser light treatments. When used to treat visible blood vessels, most patients see a 50% to 75% reduction in visible blood vessels after 1 to 3 treatments. It may be as much as 100%.

Treatments can be conducted about once a month and work to help reduce redness. If you have thickening skin, you can get great results with in-office surgery and laser resurfacing. Treating these conditions earlier will see better results.

Facial Treatments

Getting a special facial treatment can help with the problems that come with rosacea. A person may find themselves with any of these symptoms that are part of rosacea.

A facial makes you feel better and it is a luxurious treat for you and your skin. When we treat ourselves better, we look better and that can have a great result on our mental health, as well.

Living with a skin condition can make us feel embarrassed and cause us to stop socializing with our friends. When it gets worse, we feel worse and that can have an effect on our jobs, our families, and our general outlook on life.
